Frequently Asked Questions

Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive every day. If you happen to have a question that we haven’t covered here, please give us a call. We’re always happy to talk to you and provide all the answers you need.

What does “orofacial” mean?

Orofacial is a term that refers to the area of the body that consists of the head, jaw, mouth, teeth, and neck. They actually work as one big interconnected system, and often, issues with one can lead to symptoms in another, making them quite difficult to diagnose. By looking at this part of the body as a whole, we’re able to discover the root cause of various problems and provide the targeted treatments that patients need.

How can you help me sleep better?

The key to helping a patient sleep better and overcome persistent sleep issues is to discover what is causing those issues in the first place, which is an approach not used by a surprising number of doctors. Insomnia, for example, is often a result of chronic headaches, which in turn may actually be caused by tension in the jaw that is radiating to other areas of the body. In this case, solving the sleep problem is actually a matter of addressing the underlying muscle issue. This is just one example of how our practice works to help patients.

Or, for those dealing with an issue like sleep apnea, we can provide a variety of custom-made oral appliances that are specially designed to keep the airway open, preventing symptoms and allowing a patient to get the deep, restful sleep they need every night.

Why is my jaw popping and clicking all of the time?

This could actually be caused by a number of different factors, ranging from a misaligned bite to arthritis in the TMJ (jaw joint). When you come to see us, we’ll look for all the possible causes for this problem, and when we find it, we’ll be able to recommend the appropriate treatment to make the issue go away.

What could be causing my chronic headaches/migraines?

What many people are unaware of is that pain in the head can often be due to muscle tension that originates a little lower in the jaw. This could be due to a misaligned bite or an unconscious teeth grinding and clenching habit. The connection between jaw health and head health is often forgotten in modern medicine, but this kind of tension is actually one of the most common sources of chronic headaches/migraines. Fortunately, our doctors know exactly how to find it and treat it to get patients out of pain.

Can you help children?

Yes! Using functional orthodontics, we can correct minor teeth/bite alignment issues to help lower a child’s chances of needing more involved treatments in the future, and we can also guide the development of their airway to ensure they are sleeping properly.

If your child has been diagnosed and/or is being treated for ADD/ADHD, and it doesn’t seem to be working, the underlying problem could actually be sleep apnea (the symptoms for both conditions overlap quite a bit). We can help diagnose your child for this common problem and treat it as well. For many children, this is the key to eliminating their focus/hyperactivity problems.
